The application for summer youth employment is out!

It can be found at: www.jobs4summer.org

The application deadline is May 9th.
To indicate that you would like to work at the Braddock Youth Project, please select “Allegheny County DHS- Braddock Youth Project” under Question 27 on the application.
There are multiple Application Support Sites for those who need help with accessing or completing the application. The closest to Braddock is:

Goodwill of SWPA in North Versailles (294 Lincoln Highway, 15137) open Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 12 pm to 6 pm, and Saturday April 30th and May 7th from 10 am to 1 pm.

Others will be listed at the application website, www.jobs4summer.org

BYP staff will be holding two sessions during which people can come to the Nyia Page Community Center (416 Library Street, Braddock 15104) to receive help with applications.

These days will be:

Tuesday, April 26th, and Tuesday, May 3rd, from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM.

Please note that we only have four computers available, and there may be long wait times during these sessions depending on turnout. We ask that only those who are unable to complete the online application on their own and are unable to go to an official Application Support Site come these sessions.

Thank you, and we look forward to a wonderful summer as BYP nears its tenth anniversary!

National Geographic vs CitraSolv

img 19

On a blustery, not-quite-spring day, the BYP Media Team took to the parking lot behind the Nyia Page Community Center to artistically disfigure a small stack of National Geographic magazines. This was accomplished by exposing them to judicious amounts of Citrasolv, an all-natural (and, as you might have deduced, citrus-based) concentrated liquid cleaner. I learned about this process here. img 16

The Citrasolv dissolves the inks on the magazine pages. After about twenty minutes, one pulls apart the magazine (the binding is the first thing to go), and searches for interesting results. There’s no predicting what will react best; many images don’t react at all. But you get some fantastic results.

img 38img 28img 23-2In some instances, the process mildly alters the original image, which can still be readily seen.

Often times the original image is completely obliterated, however, resulting in a completely abstract image.

The way the Citrasolv lands on the paper can produce many interesting contrasting textures and results.

img 6It is important to work on this in a fairly open and well-ventilated area. This project smells like you’re trapped in a giant orange. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing, however, depends on your own personal likes and dislikes.

Smoothies!

BYP Jr. continues their food education at Heritage Out of School Time (HOST). This time, it was smoothies! The BYP Jr team set up three different tables.

Growing Station

Jessi led the station to learn how bananas and pineapples grow. The kids drew what they thought the growth of a banana and a pineapple looked like.

Everyone was fascinated by the strange plants they learned about, but wanting to eat the display fruits was definitely high on everyone’s priority list.

Do you have an image in mind?
